Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)

What is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a medical condition that affects the way the brain and nervous system communicate with the rest of the body. It’s often helpful to think of your brain as a computer. In someone who has FND, there’s no damage to the hardware, or structure, of the brain. It’s the software, or program running on the computer, that isn’t working properly. That’s what happens in FND; the brain tries to send signals to the body, but they don’t always work as intended.

Symptoms of Functional Neurological Disorder

FND can cause a variety of symptoms such as:

  • Muscle weakness: You may feel that your muscles are weak or have difficulty moving.
  • Tremors and tics: You might notice that your body trembles or twitches uncontrollably.
  • Abnormal movements: Your movements may look unusual, uncoordinated or appear as seizures.
  • Sensory disturbances: You might have trouble with your senses, such as tingling, numbness or difficulty feeling hot and cold.
  • Speech difficulties: FND can cause issues with speech, such as stuttering, slurring or difficulty speaking altogether.
  • Pain including fibromyalgia: You may experience painful sensations that have no clear cause.
  • Fatigue: You may feel fatigued or lack energy, even with plenty of rest.

What causes Functional Neurological Disorder?

The specific cause of FND is not fully understood, but it has been linked to a wide range of contributing factors including:

  • Psychological factors, such as trauma, stress, anxiety, or depression
  • Physical factors, such as injury, illness, or infection
  • Environmental and lifestyle factors, including poor diet and lack of sleep
