Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Rehabilitation

After a spinal cord injury, everyday life will look and feel different. Tasks that once felt simple may take more thought, energy, or adaptation. This can feel frustrating and, at times, uncertain.

Neuro physiotherapy focuses on helping you make the most of your current movement, building strength, improving control, and developing practical strategies for everyday life.

For over 30 years, we’ve supported individuals and families living with spinal cord injuries, helping them make meaningful progress, rebuild confidence and regain independence.

How Neuro Physiotherapy Can Help After Spinal Cord Injury

No two spinal cord injuries are the same. The effects depend on the level and severity of the injury, and each person’s experience will be different. Many patients and families have concerns about the difficulties they’re experiencing, and these are all areas where the right SCI rehabilitation and support can make a meaningful difference.

Things we can help with:

  • Changes in strength in your arms, legs, or trunk (mild weakness to complete loss of strength)
  • Reduced movement or difficulty controlling certain muscles
  • Changes in your balance when sitting or standing
  • Feeling unsteady or unsure during transfers or mobility (including challenges with wheelchair mobility)
  • Muscle tightness or spasms (including spasticity)
  • Reduced sensation, numbness, or altered feeling
  • Fatigue and reduced stamina throughout the day
  • Pain or discomfort related to posture or movement
  • Loss of confidence or increased caution with everyday tasks
  • Practical guidance for families and carers

Get Started with Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy

The first step in starting physiotherapy with us is to arrange an initial assessment. This gives us the opportunity to understand your current situation, your goals, and what support will feel most helpful for you.

Your initial assessment lasts approximately 90 minutes and looks at all aspects of how the spinal cord injury has affected you. We will:

  • Assess your movement, balance and function
  • Discuss what matters most to you
  • Be honest about what improvement may realistically be achievable
  • Create a clear plan to keep moving forward

The assessment also includes an element of treatment, so you leave with practical input from the very first session.

If you’re unsure whether neuro physiotherapy would be helpful, please feel free to call us for a friendly chat. We’re happy to talk through your situation and offer guidance on what moving forward my look like for you.

  • No referral is needed. You are welcome to contact our team directly to arrange an initial assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions

Rehabilitation after a spinal cord injury is often an ongoing process rather than a fixed timeframe.

Some people benefit from more intensive input in the early stages, while others choose to continue with regular support over time to maintain strength, prevent complications and adapt as their needs change.

Yes. We see many of our patients continuing to make progress with the help of specialist neuro physiotherapy input even years after their initial injury.

Physiotherapy plays an important role in helping you make the most of your current movement, improve strength and stability, and develop practical strategies for everyday life.

Yes. NHS services provide essential early rehabilitation, often within set timeframes. We can work alongside NHS teams or continue your rehabilitation once NHS therapy has finished, helping you build on the progress you’ve already made.

Ongoing physiotherapy can be highly beneficial in maintaining progress, improving confidence, and working towards longer-term goals. If you’d like continued support after your NHS treatment, we’re here to help.

This is one of the most common questions we’re asked — and the answer is different for everyone.

Whether walking is possible depends on the level and completeness of the spinal cord injury, as well as how your body responds to rehabilitation. For some people, walking may form part of their goals. For others, rehabilitation focuses on building independence, strength and confidence through other forms of mobility.

Our role is to help you make the most of your abilities and work towards goals that are realistic, meaningful and personal to you — supporting independence in whatever form that takes.

Yes. We provide home, care home and community visits across Sefton, Liverpool, Merseyside and West Lancashire.

Home visits allow treatment to focus on the practical challenges that matter most in everyday life — such as transfers, wheelchair mobility, moving safely around your home, managing stairs, and building confidence with daily activities.
